A Brief History of Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing
Cloud computing or simply cloud refers to the delivery of software or storage in the form of service to a group of users or enterprise based on the requirements. A pre-assigned network is used for the overall distribution and management of the provided software or services. Most often, Internet is used as a medium for distribution of the services from the provider to the end user. The term cloud has been famously derived from the diagram of cloud, which was represented as complex infrastructure and meshed networks in system diagrams.

The first visible mention of cloud dates back to 1960s, when John McCarthy expressed these lines: "computation may someday be organised as a public utility." John McCarthy was an eminent cloud scientist and later produced several white papers and case studies demonstrating the importance and benefits of this new technology. Often, cloud server computing is compared with electricity distribution system; as the underlying fundamentals are same in both the cases. In electricity distribution, the main entity: electricity is produced in some distant location, which is then distributed using cables and wire via transmitters and other equipments. Similarly, in cloud computing, the main software or service is being installed in some remote location, which is provided to the end user via communication medium such as Internet.

Amazon is one the early adaptors of this amazing technology. Way back in 2006, Amazon discovered that their existing data centers were working really slow and that they only used 10% of their total capacity. This prompted this company to start their own cloud delivery platform, using utility computing facility. And they have achieved great success by choosing cloud services.

There are several technologies and usages which have been inspired to create the modern day cloud computing. For example:

a) Autonomic Computing, wherein computers use artificial intelligence to manage their own data and operations.

b)  Client-Server Model, wherein the server provides the requested data and information to several clients.

c) Grid Computing, wherein distributed and parallel computing takes place to accomplish a particular task.

d)  Mainframe computing

e) Utility Computing And several more.
